Buying Smashing WordPress: Beyond the Blog (Smashing Magazine Book Series)

Over All Rating Reviews :
This is a good intro into customizing wordpress if you have a mid-to-high-level PHP background. The author doesn't waste any time introducing html, css, or php, which is good. A lot of good insight into template design and how to use it to do much more than a blog approach. There are specific examples (Wordpress as CMS, as a Gallery, using e-commerce, and so forth). After the author introduces basic Wordpress concepts and inner workings, the next largest section is on template design. Then a small section on plugins, and the rest of the book about going beyond a blog format with the examples mentioned earlier.

There is nothing here about ajax, which is a disappointment to me, so one star off. It is more and more prevalent and I was hoping to see at least a few examples of ajax queries occurring inside of the WP framework. I expected this topic to be covered but it is not even mentioned. Also, there is no coverage of using custom database tables for plugins that use more data than you'd be comfortable with in the WP Options table, so another star taken off. It does give decent coverage to using the WP Options table for data storage however. I would think that something intent on "smashing" wordpress would have taken it just that little bit farther. All in all however I am glad of the purchase because there is a ton of good stuff that I will definitely reference in customizing wordpress sites.

Save Vice Dos and Don'ts: 10 Years of VICE Magazine's Street Fashion Critiques

Over All Rating Reviews :
So most of the photo write-ups come from insular, genre-arguing, punk ex-junkies... That's a fact. Though on the whole, the photos are interesting, and the fashion reviews are humorous, especially when a visual faux pas is employed.

Sadly, many of the critiques are poop level, and the reviews of women generally amount to "hot-or-not" trash.

Nevertheless, the book goes great next to a toilet and will, no doubt, be the envy of all your teenage male friends.

Lowest Price Publish Your Own Magazine, Guide Book, or Weekly Newspaper: How to Start, Manage, and Profit from a Homebased Publishing Company (Culture

Over All Rating Reviews :
Of the many books that I have purchased on self-publishing, this is one of the better ones. Even though I myself was mostly interested in book publishing rather than mangazines or guidebooks, this book still served me well. It gave a lot of useful tips and pointers as well as information I never thought about. I checked the book out of the library initially, but I want my own copy.

This book gives you step by step details on how to enter the publishing field on a tight budget. It gives you an abundance of resources. Some of those include:

* Starting out with little cash (and how he did it)
* Trade secrets necessary to pick winning publications
* How to hire the people you need (at a price you can afford)
* How to save money on printing
* Reproducible Business Forms

This is a great book to include in your self-publishing library. It does cover alot of areas, but I don't usually complain when someone gives me more bang for my buck.

Last Minute Starting & Running a Successful Newsletter or Magazine

Over All Rating Reviews :
Starting a magazine, as I have done, requires more than just an editorial plan. Woodard's book does a nice job of establishing what needs to go into an editorial plan but it completely ignores production issues, printing, advertising and funding. It's a little like telling someone how to design a car without mentioning that in addition to nice upholstery and great body work it needs an engine and tires. Put another way, she only talks about the part of the iceberg you can see.

Great deals Starting & Running a Successful Newsletter or Magazine

Over All Rating Reviews :
This book is a good general overview, but it misses some important stuff that someone who is generally unfamiliar with the publishing business will need to know before attempting to start a magazine.

I found the book lacking in the basic details I needed to know, such as where to find distributors, how to get a UPC code, how to recruit new writers, etc. For a basic overview and particularly for the marketing side of owning a magazine (which is very important), I'd recommend this book. For the nuts-and-bolts stuff I'd recommend the e-book, "How Not to Start a Magazine," published by Palfrey Media ...

Order Bicycling Magazine's New Cyclist Handbook

Over All Rating Reviews :
This book is a good introduction to cycling. It will give good tips on how to set up your riding position, ride securely, differences between mountain biking and road biking, buying appropriate clothing, etc. I'm not a total newbie on MTB but i learned a lot with this book.
I gave 5 stars to this book because as the title says, this is a book for the new cyclist, so if you are a more advanced rider, you can still find it useful but you should look out to something more specific.

Low Price Mothering Magazine's Having a Baby, Naturally: The Mothering Magazine Guide to Pregnancy and Childbirth

Over All Rating Reviews :
I purchased this book from Amazon last November for the library of my local La Leche League group. I own a copy as well. (I also own Peggy O'Mara's other book: "Natural Family Living", which is wonderful.) In "Having a Baby, Naturally", Ms. O' Mara is very balanced and straightforward in her presentation of pregnancy and childbirth. I especially enjoyed the section explaining the types of tests women are presented with during early pregnancy. I have given this book to several expecting friends as a gift and plan to give it to my sister in the future. This book is included in La Leche League's recommended book list. I do own Ina May's book " Ina May's Guide to Natural Childbirth", which is also very good and highly recommended for someone planning a home birth. I am a longtime reader of Mothering Magazine. Fans of Mothering should be aware that "Having a Baby, Naturally" was written to appeal to a wide mainstream audience and not the relatively small segment of the population interested in alternative practices. I am the mother of twins born by C-section in 1997 and a child born naturally at home in late 2001. This book would have been extremely helpful to me in my first pregnancy and would have allowed me the information I needed to avoid an unnecessary C-section. The special situations section is extensive and the breastfeeding information is good. Overall, this is a great book.

Over All Rating Reviews :
I've wanted to start an original content development project for years. Reading this books gets my wheels spinning. If I do move forward with my idea, this book will be by my side. I run a small business training program and I would definitely recommend this book to any client who had an interest in publishing.

I'd love to sit down with Dr. Williams and pick his brain. There are questions I'd like answered beyond the book, but this makes the whole idea of starting a local project seem possible.

Buying Projects for the Birder's Garden: Over 100 Easy Things That You can Make to Turn Your Yard and Garden into a Bird-Friendly Haven

Over All Rating Reviews :
I own a good dozen or more books on how to attract birds to my garden. This book is definitely one of my favorites.

It contains a variety of very easy projects on best ways of providing seeds, making your own bird treats (like those expensive seed bells they sell in stores), creating feeding stations, planting habitats, setting up water stations, birdhouses and more. There is also a section devoted to hummingbirds and butterflies.

I really like that it isn't a bird or plant identification book. One of my pet peeves with many of my other "project" books is that they dilute their content by including bird identification charts for instance - often up to 1/3 of the book with another third devoted to pictures and descriptions of the plants. I'd rather leave that to a specialized book and let my project books be filled with (imagine this) projects! There is a small amount of this type of information in this book, but it's generally to the point and captured in simple and easy to read charts. I would suggest anyone looking for that type of material should buy appropriate field guides.

I love that the projects are pretty much entirely able to be made from recycled materials (like using the plastic tubes that tennis balls come in or metal coffee cans or plastic plant saucers for instance) and scrap wood. They are very easy and could be wonderful projects for engaging your kids with nature and getting fast results. Tips are also included for maintenance too (such as keeping feeding stations looking their best).

I also love the garden ideas - simple plans for small patches of specialized garden areas - there's one for a self-renewing bird attracting garden with a ton of seed-producing annual flowering plants for instance; a garden for producing nesting materials, another for attracting butterflies by providing food for their caterpillars, one for hummingbirds and a number of others.

Overall, if you are trying to attract birds to your yard and especially if you are looking for ideas for projects you can do with your kids to give them an appreciation for nature, I think you can't go wrong with this book.
