The first of three volumes charting the history of the Modernist Magazine in Britain, North America, and Europe, this collection offers the first comprehensive study of the wide and varied range of 'little magazines' which were so instrumental in introducing the new writing and ideas that came to constitute literary and artistic modernism in the UK and Ireland. In thirty-seven chapters covering over eighty magazines expert contributors investigate the inner dynamics and economic and intellectual conditions that governed the life of these fugitive but vibrant publications. We learn of the role of editors and sponsors, the relation of the arts to contemporary philosophy and politics, the effects of war and economic depression and of the survival in hard times of radical ideas and a belief in innovation. The chapters are arranged according to historicalthemes with accompanying contextual introductions, and include studies of the New Age, Blast, the Egoist and the Criterion, New Writing, New Verse , and Scrutiny as well as of lesser known magazines such as the Evergreen, Coterie, the Bermondsey Book, the Mask, Welsh Review, the Modern Scot, and theBell. To return to the pages of these magazines returns us a world where the material constraints of costs and anxieties over censorship and declining readerships ran alongside the excitement of a new poem or manifesto. This collection therefore confirms the value of magazine culture to the field of modernist studies; it provides a rich and hitherto under-examined resource which both brings to light the debate and dialogue out of which modernism evolved and helps us recover the vitality and potentialof that earlier discussion.

Awards:
The New Yorker is the most-honored magazine in publishing history. Among many other honors, it has won 53 National Magazine Awards, more than any other publication in the organization’s history.

Amazon.com Review:
Founded in 1925, The New Yorker hardly changed for its first 60 years, both in its dry, type-heavy design and in its reputation as a writer's and reader's haven. In 1987 it was on only its second editor when management decided to shake things up. A rocky decade ensued, but The New Yorker is now back at the top of its game under David Remnick's editorship. Each issue offers commentaries and reporting on politics, culture, and events, with a focus that's both national and international; humor and cartoons; fiction and poetry; and reviews of books, movies, theater, music, art, and fashion. Several times a year special issues focus on a theme--music, fashion, business. The writing is mostly first-rate, frequently coming from top literary and journalistic talents. The New Yorker's weekly issues can seem overwhelming--so much good stuff to read, piling up so fast!--but it's as easy to dip in for a small snack as it is to wade in for a substantial meal. --Nicholas H. Allison

Magazine Article Writing

!: Magazine Article Writing

Do you want to make money or make a living writing articles? If so, you don't just need to write articles that can be viewed online. You may, though, have other ideas. Magazine articles may be one of those ideas.

If you are fresh to the field of magazine articles, you might be hunting for useful ideas. To begin with, it is important to do research ahead of writing. This research can simply be done online, by a normal internet search, or by buying a copy of the Writer's Market books. The particular books outline paying publications, as well as magazines, and their expectations.

As for the value of research, it will save you time as well as money. Magazines focus in a number of diverse genres; decide what these genres are early on. You want to get the magazines that would be the best for your article. Research can also raise your odds of getting published, since various publishing companies expressly outline what they are searching for and what they are not.

Once you have worked out which magazines you want to write an article for submission, purchase copies of that magazine. At least see if magazine articles are accessible on the company's internet site for viewing. It is very common for a particular magazine to have a certain fashion of writing that it follows. Ensure your article is unique, but follows similar styles of writing.

Another method to increase your probability of getting a magazine article in print is to pick the subject of your article cleverly. Write on a subject that you hold a good interest in or one which you're passionate about. When a subject is close to your heart, your article is more likely to be of better quality. In addition, write on a subject that you are educated on. Are you a person with a teaching experience? In that case, use your experience to write informative pieces on teaching, and so forth. Lots of professional publishing firms not only wish for quality articles, but articles that are supported with facts, figures, and knowledge.

Setting practical goals for yourself will be important. If you are fresh to freelance writing, do not expect to see your article accepted and published to start with the first time around. Of course, you like to aim high, but do not allow a rejection letter get you down. Instead, put it to use to improve your article writing quality.

A further way to build up your likelihood of receiving a magazine article in print is to get published online first. A lot of publishing firms ask to see samples of your earlier work. Having content available online, even if it is just on a personal website or blog, will improve to make you look like an "experienced," writer. That is, one that will be able to bring something to the magazine. For the most effective outcome, aim for internet sites that are known as eZines, as they are online magazines, as are article directories.

With article submission, it's important to keep to the directions given to you. As stated above, the majority publishing companies will let you know what they want or don't want. Hopefully this information has improved your likelihood of getting published.

Men's Health Magazine

!: Men's Health Magazine

Men's Health Magazine was originally founded in 1987 and focused primarily on men's health. Today, it focuses on all aspects of men's lives, including nutrition, relationships, sexuality, fitness, and lifestyle, as well as other areas. It's published by Rodale, Inc., in Emmaus, Pennsylvania. It is the largest and best selling men's magazine "brand," with 38 editions that publish globally and 12 million monthly readers. Its monthly circulation is 1.85 million; its website also boasts about 40 million hits a month.

Originally meant as a health magazine, today, the magazine focuses on every aspect of men's lives, including the financial, fashion, and even travel aspects, as well as, of course, relationships. It has also been nominated for eight national magazine awards, and is a major source of information for men who just want to "be in the know" about the latest trends in men's lives and solutions to problems.

Editor in chief David Zinczenko has been at the helm of the magazine since 2000, with the magazine seeing circulation growth of 30% in that time. Ad page volume has grown as well, from 700 pages to 1150 pages. Under Zinczenko's leadership, it changed its look somewhat as well, in that it began focusing on celebrities and athletes exclusively as its cover "models." Zinczenko was named Editor of the Year by Adweek in 2008.

Men's Health has gotten involved in combating childhood obesity too, with its launch of the FitSchools initiative, in 2007. With this initiative, health, fitness and nutrition experts go to selected schools and overhaul the school lunch and fitness programs within the school itself. Its now-established The FitSchools Foundation is a nonprofit organization that seeks to end childhood obesity and get kids interested in an active, fit lifestyle.

In November 2008, Men's Magazine scored a major coup when it put then President Elect Barack Obama on its cover. As one executive said, "He is the prototypical Men's Health guy: successful, a good dad, a good husband." This is one focus, in fact, that sets Men's Health apart from so many other "guy magazines on the market. The focus is on the complete man, not just on building big muscles, or on the superficial. Fitness and health are there of course as well, but they comprise only a part of the picture, not all of it.

However, it has garnered some criticism because the magazine does focus quite a lot on the so-called "perfect body." This has led some critics to surmise that it will make men worry about their physical appearance more, such that they workout harder to the point of injury, develop eating disorders, and overly obsess about their physiques in general.

Be that as it may, this strong performer, which won Best Magazine Performer of the Decade from Cappell's Circulation Report in 2007 and continues to be named to "best of" lists on a yearly basis, is clearly not going anywhere. With its focus on the "whole man," not just one aspect such as fitness or sexuality, it continues to be a dominant and well-thought-out choice on the newsstand for men everywhere.

Being on a panel for readers is free of charge and often open to both paid subscribers and occasional purchasers. Participants will receive a variety of perks including free samples, free coupons, product testing and review, and sweepstakes / contest entries. Additionally, most reader and subscriber panels also have user forums where you can connect with other fans who share similar interests.

The first step in joining a panel is to visit the website of your favorite magazine; most will have a direct link connecting you to the registration forms. If the panel is somewhat exclusive, you may have to search around on the internet, check survey site databases or visit forums to figure out how to join. If you are joining a number of panels, it is a good idea to create a spread sheet with the web address, your user name and password.
